ALMA MATER

Very few things in life stick in your mind as strongly as something you MUST learn under great stress and pressure. Such a thing was the song all OCS candidates learned to sing with extreme pride and great enthusiasm.

Even today, after more than 40 years have passed, the words and notes come to memory just like it was yesterday. This song is a simple testament to the training and lessons learned during our time at Ft. Benning. Singing this song was sacred. It was the only thing that could stop everything dead in its tracks. Things like  physical training (PT), marching, eating, class, the infamous "grass Drills", etc. all immediately stopped as every OCS candidate in the company would come to the position of attention and sing together as a platoon or whole company.

Here are those indelible words -

Far across the Chattahoochee

To the Upatoi

Stands our loyal Alma Mater

Benning's School for boys.

Forward ever, Backward never

Faithfully we strive

Toward our final destination

Follow me with pride

When it's time and we are called

To guard our country's might

We'll be there with head held high

To lead in Freedom's fight

Yearning ever, Failing never

To keep our country free

The call is clear, we meet the task

For we are Infantry
